Groups call for action after video of deputy tasing Black female Lake County student


Students, parents and residents went to a school board meeting in Lake County after a female student was tased by a deputy. Groups called for action after a video surfaced of a Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputy tasing a 15-year old Black girl and student at Eustis High School.”This is a child that we’re talking about. No way does any child ever deserve to manhandled and then tased with a weapon,” Florida Student Power Network’s David Caicedo said.Members of the Florida Student Network demanded the Lake County School Board remove school resource officers and deputies from school campuses.”I am 18. I would not have — I would not want a grown man to tase me to stop me from fighting. It’s how you anger them up more,” Leesburg resident Ariana Brown said. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Billy Brown was attempting to break up a fight between two students in the cafeteria at lunchtime.”That was an incident that the deputy had no alternative but to do that. He did try verbal de-escalation, he did try to physically restrain her but that didn’t work. and I’m hoping this is the last time we have this type of conversation but it is important to keep us in the schools,” Sgt. Fred Jones said.”The idea is absolutely diabolical that we would even entertain the idea of removing law enforcement from schools in Lake County,” Lake County parent Matthew Robinson said.”Fact of the matter is Black and brown students have a very different experience with SRO’s than other students. Your children may feel protected with law enforcement roaming these school halls but for students of color SRO’s are a reminder of how dangerous it is to be Black in America,” Nushartan Nor said.The Eustis High School student faces possible criminal charges of resisting a law enforcement officer with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer.
