Hurricane Ida, the latest named storm in the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, strengthened Sunday into a Category 4 hurricane on its way to Louisiana, where it is expected to make landfall.
As of Sunday, Ida was crossing the Gulf of Mexico with maximum sustained wind speeds of near 150 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. A storm surge watch is in place for Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
